Rain Rain in St. John’s

St. John’s is one area I had done very little research on before we got there. The rain is still following us, I think it just wants to keep the truck clean. Well, it’s managing to do a decent job of that. It was really pouring when Sean and I were out of George Street. If you have not heard of this street before, it is a relatively short block in St. John’s Newfoundland that is lined with bars, side by side on both sides of the street. I heard it can be quite the street party with visitors and locals alike trying to have one drink in each establishment as they walk the block. It would be quite the event to try or even see. I doubt many would be able to actually complete this task without winding up in a small ally or lying on the walkway passed out. With the rain and it being a Monday night the place seemed eerily like a ghost block instead of a party block. The dinner was good as were the couple of beers we had there. The harbour was sheltered (isn’t that the meaning of a harbour) and therefore the view was not out to sea but rather to both sides of the harbour. It was very nice just not what I had imagined.

Atlantic Ocean heading south-west

ShantyThe Atlantic-Marine ferry service is talking us across to Nova Scotia. It’s going to be a 17 and 1/2 journey this time. The ship was late again, and this time left at 4:30 am, thank goodness for us thinking ahead and reserving sleeping bunks. The bunks are dorm style bunk beds, very usable and not very expensive. A worthy investment after trying to sleep in seats for the shorter crossing a couple of days ago. I managed to catch up on some much needed rest, Sean however got some rest, but not much due to others talking and kids playing nearby. As for missing the view of the voyage, well the view is just ocean and fog for hours and hours. I guess I could have tried to spot a whale or something, that may pass the time. Instead I am typing out a few drafts to post on GoingCoastal.ca while I listen to the live band sing out some good old Canadian Maritime folk songs. The vessel that is talking us across this time is the MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood. This ferry is huge, it can carry 340 cars, 80 trucks and 1200 passengers. By taking this route we save about 900KM of driving, something we are more that willing to do on the return back to the west coast.

Sparta!

We are on our way back, this time through the United States. After a two night stayover in London Ontario (thank you so much cousin Jane, your hospitality will always be remembered) we are pushing the miles and did over 1000km and landed in Sparta Wisconsin. It’s major claim is, it’s the Bicycling Capital of America! I have not seen many bicycles, a LOT of tractor-trailer trucks but no bicycles as of yet. Then it may have something to do with driving most of the day on the I-90 and arriving in Sparta after 10pm (we gained an hour so it really feels like 11pm) and the truck was in motion for over 11hours.

WE ARE NOT ALONE

img-1-4Devils Tower: As we got closer to this I started to have a craving for Mashed Potatoes. I also kept expecting to see dead cows in the fields any moment.

This is really an amazing sight to see in Wyoming. Viewing rock about 200 million years old, and the formation…

Over 17,000 Kilometers, 28 days, 10 provinces, 12 states and 183 hours of driving!

freshtatIn celebration of completing this journey, I got a Tattoo. No, it was not entirely about the trip, it has been something on my mind for several years; this just seemed to be the perfect time. The summer of 2008 is going to be a summer I will remember for years!
